Footsteps To Freedom

My husband wrote a post this morning speaking on wasting time and trying to change someone who was not willing to change. I responded to this post by telling my husband you are only responsible for changing yourself. Could the inability to change come from other factors such as drug abuse, or mental illness? We do not know why people do what they do. We do not understand when see others and think this action may be their bottom, but that does not mean that it is. There is a fine line between support and enabling. Was the resistance to change due to comfortability? It does not matter how well we think we know people, there are areas in their lives we may not be privy to. That is why we cannot spend energy on trying to change someone.

You cannot believe you have so much power and influence on someone, they can change because you want them to or because you say so. As Maya Angelou said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them!” People may have a desire to change but that is not for us to navigate.

If you are in a relationship and you are the head of the household, you must lead by example. No matter how those folks in your household act out, you must take the lead. Show them by your works! Spending countless years and time waiting for someone to be what you want them to be, is time wasted. People do not change because you want them to. People change because they want to.
People take too much time looking at flaws in others when they can spend the time focusing on their own flaws. For we all have them. We are not perfect because we drive nice cars or have homes and careers. We are not expendable to flaws because we have titles or letters at the end of our name. EVERBODY can stand to do work on themselves.

We are only responsible for changing ourselves. It does not matter if the person you want to change is your husband, wife, or child. We can only be responsible for us.
